Elementor vs Gutenberg comparison guide image

Elementor vs Gutenberg for a Business Website

Elementor and Gutenberg are the two most common ways to build pages in WordPress today. Gutenberg is the block editor built into WordPress itself. Elementor is a visual page builder plugin, with a free version and Elementor Pro. Both can produce a professional business website; they suit different teams and projects.

Most of the business websites I build use Elementor Pro, and I also work with the block editor when a project calls for it. This comparison is for business owners deciding how their site should be built.

What is Gutenberg?

Gutenberg is the WordPress block editor, part of WordPress core since version 5.0. Pages are built from blocks such as paragraphs, images, columns and buttons. With a block theme, the same editor can also edit headers, footers and templates through full site editing. Because it ships with WordPress, there is no extra plugin to install or license.

What is Elementor?

Elementor is a drag-and-drop page builder plugin. You design pages visually on the front end, with detailed control over spacing, typography, responsive layouts and effects. Elementor Pro adds a theme builder for headers, footers and templates, forms, popups, loop grids for dynamic content and WooCommerce builders. It is usually paired with a lightweight theme such as Hello Elementor or Astra.

Elementor vs Gutenberg: key differences

  • Editing experience: Elementor offers a visual, design-first editor with precise layout control; Gutenberg is simpler and closer to writing content.
  • Design flexibility: Elementor makes complex, custom layouts easier without code; Gutenberg can achieve a lot with modern blocks and block themes, sometimes with custom block development.
  • Performance: Gutenberg pages are typically lighter because there is no extra builder plugin. A well-built Elementor site can still load fast with sensible settings, optimized images and good hosting.
  • Features: Elementor Pro includes forms, popups and theme building out of the box; with Gutenberg these come from the theme or additional plugins.
  • Cost: Gutenberg is free with WordPress; Elementor has a free version, and Elementor Pro is a paid license.
  • Editing for your team: both work for non-technical editors when the site is built with reusable sections and global styles.

Is Elementor good for SEO?

Yes, when it is used well. Search engines care about the content, headings, page titles, speed and mobile experience, not which editor built the page. The things that matter are clean heading structure, compressed images, limited heavy effects, a lightweight theme and a good SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO. The same applies to Gutenberg.

Which should you choose for a business website?

  • Choose Elementor Pro if you want a custom-designed site with detailed layouts, built-in forms and popups, and visual editing for your team.
  • Choose Gutenberg if the site is content-led, you want the lightest possible setup, or your team already works in the block editor.

For most small and mid-sized business websites I build, Elementor Pro with the Astra or Hello Elementor theme gives the best balance of custom design and easy editing. See Astra vs Hello Elementor for the theme side of that choice, or Elementor website design for how I build these sites.
