When you start looking for help with a WordPress website, you will see two job titles: WordPress designer and WordPress developer. Some people do one, some do the other, and some do both. Knowing the difference helps you hire the right person and avoid paying twice.
I work as both: I design business websites and build them in WordPress with Elementor Pro. Here is how the two roles differ and which one your project needs.
What is a WordPress designer?
A WordPress designer decides how the website looks and how visitors move through it. Typical work includes:
- Planning the pages and the order of sections on each page.
- Choosing layouts, typography, colors and images that fit the brand.
- Designing mobile, tablet and desktop versions.
- Making calls to action, forms and contact details easy to find.
- Producing mockups in tools such as Figma, or designing directly in a page builder.
What is a WordPress developer?
A WordPress developer turns the design into a working website and makes it do what the business needs. Typical work includes:
- Setting up WordPress, hosting, the theme and plugins.
- Building the pages, templates, header, footer and forms.
- Adding features such as booking, WooCommerce stores, custom post types or integrations.
- Writing custom code (PHP, CSS, JavaScript) when plugins are not enough.
- Handling speed, security, redirects, migrations and updates.
WordPress designer vs developer at a glance
- Focus: the designer focuses on appearance and user experience; the developer on how the site works.
- Output: the designer produces layouts and mockups; the developer produces the live website.
- Tools: designers use design tools and page builders; developers use WordPress, code, hosting and developer tools.
- When it matters: design matters most for first impressions and conversions; development matters most for features, speed, security and growth.
Which one do you need?
- You need a designer if you already have a developer, or if the site works but looks dated and does not convert.
- You need a developer if you already have a design (for example in Figma), or the site needs new features, fixes, speed work or a migration.
- You need both for most new business websites and redesigns. Hiring one person who does both avoids handoff problems, where the design looks right in a mockup but cannot be built well or is hard to edit.
What does a WordPress developer do for a small business?
For a small business, a WordPress developer usually builds the site, connects the forms and tools the business uses, keeps the site fast and secure, and makes changes as the business grows: new service pages, location pages, offers and integrations. Many small businesses also keep the same developer for ongoing WordPress website maintenance.
How to choose between them
Ask to see live websites the person has worked on and what their role was on each one. A designer should show live sites, not only mockups; a developer should be able to explain how the site is built and how you will edit it.
